Chapter 26

Damon

“I got one of each size,” I tell Jonah as he walks toward me. His eyes stay focused straight ahead. He doesn’t even bother to glance at the four different colored athletic bands in my hand. “I guess now wouldn’t be a good time to joke about the pride flag?”

His lips don’t twitch at my humor as he storms past. He’s gone, disappeared down the long hall before I can even ask him what’s wrong.

He’s on the shuttle when the team loads up. He even climbs off before us when we arrive at a restaurant for dinner, but he disappears, never joining us at the table. The team talks animatedly, some players giving a play by play of the exact same practice we all just left, as if we weren’t on the ice all day with them.

Jonah is back on the shuttle when we load up and head to the hotel, but he’s the first one off and gone again before my feet hit the concrete. Turning down offers from both Hall and Eggelson to hang out, I cite Standridge’s rule, exhaustion, and my desperate need for a shower before catching a full elevator up to the room I shared with Jonah last night.

Using the key I snatched off the console before leaving the room this morning, I swing open the thick, wooden door to find the inside quiet and empty. There aren’t shower sounds coming from the dark bathroom or a lump of a person in either of the beds.

Knowing he’ll have to come back eventually, I grab my things and hit the shower. The last week of practice has been tough. As if I have something to prove, I skated like a madman, and I’m feeling it in my body, especially the left side of my groin.

I spend what seems like forever in the shower, letting myself imagine that Jonah will strip down and join me once he gets into the room. It never happens though. The room is just as quiet when I turn the water off and run a fluffy towel over my heated skin. I dress, sweats and a t-shirt, because I have no idea if Standridge will stop by. Explaining why I’m naked if Jonah opens the door with him in tow isn’t something I feel like confronting.

The TV drones on for what seems like hours before the electric lock on the door whirs and Jonah steps inside the room. Seeing me lounged back on the bed we shared last night, his steps falter.

“What are you doing in here?”

“Umm.” I hold my hands up and look around. “Jackson said I have to stay with you. Where have you been?”

“I’m a grown man,” he spits.

I smile at the familiar conversation.

“We had plans,” I tell him and point to the athletic bands on the end of the bed.

“You’re more than capable of doing those stretches on your own.” Crossing the room, he tugs his shirt up and over his head. A second later it falls to the floor before his fingers work the waistband of his cargo shorts.
